Air pollution and environmental conditions may increase airway inflammation or bronchomotor tone. Extrapulmonary effects can also increase the risk of exacerbations, as well as mortality. Exacerbations increase lung inflammation, worsen respiratory symptoms and lung function, and accelerate disease progression.
